ATF Form 6NIA (Visiting the US with Firearms) Renewal

Each spring, early summer I run into Canadian shooters worried about the ability to attend an upcoming shoot in the states, as they had let there temporary US import permit expire. The renewal process for the permit can take up to six weeks. I have seen it done in a week or less, but I would not count on it.

Shooters using the HUNTING LICENSE option and have a valid (not expired) stateside hunting license can renew now.

You can use any stateside hunting license to renew your ATF Form 6NIA, as long as it is valid at the time submitted.

- You submit on December 10th and your license expires December 31. That is acceptable.

- When you receive your approved ATF Form 6NIA you will need a valid license when crossing the border. Does not need to be the one you submitted to the ATF. The permit is valid for one year as long as the hunting license is current.

Further Guidance...

ATF Form 6NIA (Visitors to the USA)

* I strongly urge the use of the Hunting License option instead of Shoot Invitations for those who routinely cross the border to attend shoots or visit clubs.

  1. The Alaskan non-resident alien licence is available for the next year starting in November, This is great for people crossing the border in the first few weeks of the year, when other licences are not available. It cost $20US and you can print it on your printer. A hard copy will follow within a week or so.
