Quebec skeet shooter Bryce Verrall provided photos of the shipping container converted for use on a trap field at Club L'Acadie, located southeast of Montreal, Quebec.

Marking Cars for Gun Thefts False Internet Rumor

Posted on OpposingViews

Long before Al Gore “created” the Internet, gun owners were busy perfecting grassroots networking. Today, gun owners have an almost unlimited number of ways to spread information crucial to our community. And, while the Internet is certainly an indispensible tool for protecting our rights, an unfortunate side effect has been the fast and easy spread of rumors.

The latest of these, appearing on Internet message boards and in emails, warns of a growing trend of gangsters marking the license plates or wheels of vehicles parked at shooting clubs, gun stores, ranges and gun shows. According to the rumor, the thieves later spot or follow the marked vehicles and break into them to steal guns while their owners are elsewhere.

The reports go on to claim that the tactic has reached “epidemic” proportions in San Antonio, Texas, and specifically, at the National Skeet Shooting Association and National Sporting Clays Association’s National Shooting Complex. Naturally, the NSC investigated the matter thoroughly. They concluded that the rumor is false on several counts.

First, all of the “suspicious” vehicle markings reported to the NSC turned out to be routine—placed there by those who manufactured, owned or serviced the vehicles. The online reports also suggest that the NSCA National Championship was a particular target of gun thieves. In reality, there were no reported gun thefts at the 2011 event. A claim that a police chief in San Antonio met with 400 shooters to discuss the trend is also false. (To read the NSC’s full statement, go to

Gun theft is a serious concern for all gun owners, who should certainly take reasonable precautions to protect their firearms from criminals. But the truth of this story should also remind us that there’s no need to panic—and that it’s always worth taking a few moments to check out tales like this before passing them on. After all, it would be a tragedy if shooters were discouraged from pursuing the activities they love and exercising their Second Amendment rights due to rampant urban legends.

Purchase a coffee at Starbucks on Valentine's day

Purchase a coffee at Starbucks on Valentine's day and support the RIGHT TO CARRY....

Starbucks' "Pro-Gun" Policy Prompts Gun Victims' Advocate Group to Launch Nationwide Boycott on Valentine's Day 2012

CHICAGO, Jan. 23, 2012 -- /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A nationwide boycott of Starbucks stores and its products will be launched on Valentine's Day 2012. Its goal is to eliminate the risk of guns in public places and ultimately to bring sane gun laws to the U.S.

This boycott is being called by the National Gun Victim's Action Council (NGAC), a network of 14 million gun victims, the faith community including the: Episcopal Peace Fellowship, United Church of Christ, Fellowship of Reconciliation (46 peace fellowships and 43 affiliate fellowships), secular groups working to reduce gun violence and many of the organizations that support passing sane gun laws.WHY STARBUCKS? Currently, Starbucks allows guns and assault weapons to be openly carried in its stores (in 43 states) and concealed and carried in its stores (in 49 states) (See Photos). Starbucks' compliance with the National Rifle Association's Pro-Gun Agenda was exposed in 2010 when members of the "open carry" movement began meeting in popular chains, such as California Pizza Kitchen, Peets, IKEA, Disney and Starbucks openly carrying their handguns and assault rifles. (Types of Guns)

To protect their customers and employees, all of the retail chains—except for Starbucks— banned guns from being carried in their stores.

"Starbucks allowing guns to be carried in thousands of their stores significantly increases everyone's risk of being a victim of gun violence," says Elliot Fineman, CEO of the NGAC. "Open and conceal and carry are among the reasons there are 12,000 gun homicides each year in the U.S. If we had England's gun laws we would expect 375 gun homicides each year—97% less than we have. England's gun laws are based on protecting public safety, ours on maximizing sales for the gun industry." Non-Sane Gun Laws

Starbucks has the legal right to ban guns but despite having been petitioned by thousands, asked at a shareholder meeting, and a direct appeal made to their Board, Starbucks clings to this policy that puts millions of Americans at risk every day and encourages the spread of guns being carried in public.

IMPACT OF STARBUCKS BOYCOTT: Fineman says, "Starbucks steadfast support of the NRA's lethal pro-gun agenda damages its 'socially conscious company' brand. Further," adds Fineman, "Monte Carlo Simulation risk analysis indicates that 90% of the time, our boycott will reduce Starbucks stock price by an amount no rational company would allow."

According to NGAC, the boycott will end when Starbucks rejects the NRA's Pro-Gun agenda by banning all guns from their stores and committing to be an Aggressive Corporate Advocate for sane gun laws.

ABOUT NGAC: The National Gun Victims Action Council (NGAC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit network of 14 million gun victims, survivors, their families, supporters, the faith community, secular organizations working on gun violence reduction and ordinary people leveraging their economic (buying) power to change America's gun laws. NGAC can be found at

South Carolina, where the dead can vote!

Obama and Holder bring Chicago politics to the nation...

At the end of December the state received notification that the Justice Department was rejecting South Carolina’s law requiring voters to show photo ID before casting their ballots.

The department claims the law makes it harder for minorities to vote.

According to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, the State Election Commission reported 239,000 people were registered to vote without photo ID. Through an audit by the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles it was discovered 37,000 on the list were deceased and 96,000 had moved to other states.

Despite that news, Democrats have been critical of the South Carolina voter ID law as well as voter ID efforts in other states.

“Republicans clearly want to shrink who is going to the polls because they know they can’t win elections on the merits,” Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told MSNBC late last month.

Bad luck in three's

A rough week...

Broke the right side stem on my shooting glasses. Made a quick repair using electrical tape Decot put me in contact with a local Decot dealer. I went with a new frame instead of a repair as the frames had seen three different prescription changes through the years.

Lost the back (battery cover) off my cell phone at the gun club. Found a replacement on Ebay. $6 to include shipping. I assume that as I found a replacement the lost cover will be found at the club.

Driver side sliding door wouldn't electronically lock/unlock. You don't realize how dependent you get on hitting a button on your key until it doesn’t work. Dealer had to replace a part in the door : (

On the plus side. I received a small settlement check from a class action lawsuit.

Several years back I attended a skeet shoot at the Kingston club in Kingston, Ontairo. I used my credit card at the motel and restaurant. When I received my monthly statement the service fee for using the card in Canada was way out of line, much higher then fees I had seen in the past. The fee was so high I have not used my credit card in Canada from that time.

It seems the credit card company increased exchange rate and service charge fees without giving adequate notice, thus a class action lawsuit that I was not aware.

Total surprise to receive a check that was higher then fees charged!

Gamaliel vs Graf & Sons

Gamaliel Shooting Supply is doing a promotion.

"Save big on powder and primers! Pay only the UPS Haz-Mat Fee, with no freight charges or handling fees!"

I did a cost comparison between Gamaliel and Graf & Sons.

700X $119.95

$27.50 UPS Haz-Mat Fee

Total $147.45

Graf & Sons

700X $123.99

Handling & Insurance: $4.95

Hazardous Materials Fee: $27.50

Total: $156.44

It pays to check both sites as sometimes it goes the other way. I can usually find wads at cheaper prices elsewhere.

As always, it's better to place an order with your club if it makes component purchases for members.

* From time to time Graf waives the Hazardous Fee if ordering X amount of powder. I think it's 32 pounds. Last fall they did this. You can usually add primers to that type off order.

Eye Protection a must, Gun barrel explodes

Three people were injured and taken to hospital in a shooting accident at the Nanaimo Fish and Game Protective Association Wednesday afternoon.

One barrel of a 12-gauge, double-barrel shotgun blew up as a man was shooting.

Chunks of the gun hit two men standing to the right of his cousin, who was shooting clay pigeons at the time of the accident.

One of those men was walking around after the incident with a bandage wrapped around his head, but was also taken to hospital.

RCMP confirmed all three had head lacerations. The shooter also has burns to his wrist, a facial facial laceration and hearing loss.

Nanaimo RCMP said all three are club members who were skeet shooting.

More than 100 rounds were fired prior to the incident.

* Another reports says they were shooting trap.

Two thumbs up, Gold NobelSport shells!

I purchased Trap Gold NobelSport Number 8, 1.8 oz. shells at $48 a case back in early December and we just recently had a chance to shoot them.

Shooting 1100s we shot five rounds each before cleaning.

Didn't put them to paper but liked the hits I was getting at 16-yard trap, my primary reason for the purchase.

Soft shooting, no shell feeding problems, and no failures to fire.

After breaking down the gun it looks like I could of easily gone 8-10 boxes before cleaning, as no buildup to speak of. One of the easiest cleanings I've done in some time. I wiped them down and finished the cleaning with Breakfree. I usually clean between 100s at a shoot, but think I will pass at the next shoot and see what happens.

Jan 10, 2012 @ Flager Gun Club

Tuesday morning shooting at Flagler Gun & Archery Club.

Trap shooters coming and going throughout the AM. We shot three rounds, all fully squaded.

A slight breeze. Birds flying high.

In the past year the club installed a coin (token) operated trap machine. Members can shoot at the club when the club is not open. I was told the cost of the token device has already been recovered. Plans are to install on a second field, dedicated for trap doubles.

Skeet, station #8.

Jan 7, 2012 @ Amelia Shotgun Sports

We spent the afternoon at Amelia Shotgun Sports. The club is located north of Jacksonville in the town of Yulee. Almost in Georgia.

In the low 70's.

Almost a full parking lot!

The club has two shooting stands at each station, maybe seperated by 40 to 50 feet. A Blue stand and a Red stand. We shot the Red stand course. The course also has several Yellow stands. Those are for first time shooters.

Expect a workout. Keep the gun moving...

Two 5-stands. One available for practice, a second used in conjunction with the first for shoots.

Trap received a workout today. The field was being used when we arrived and still in use upon departure.

Jan 4, 2012 @ Voulsia Skeet & Trap Club

A sunny, no wind 47 degrees when we arrived. A warm 60 degrees upon departure.

Three trap fields. Pads poured for 27 yard shooting. The club has plans for ATA trap. On my last visit I thought the trap field farthest to the left had a little delay from the time you called until you saw the target, but didn't notice it today.

The skeet guys I talked to are pushing for a third skeet field. An overflow turnout the previous Wednesday due to the holidays.

One of the shooters kept missing the target off trap #2. He asked what lead to use and was told eight feet. Hit the front of the target on the next try.

Making a delivery!

We had a chance to try out the Trap Gold NobelSport shells I purchased. Number 8, 1.8 oz. Nice pattern at 16 yards. We thought they were soft shooting. No problems cycling the 1100's. Made in Italy.

The Voulsia Skeet & Trap Club is 15 minutes from the I-95 Daytona International Speedway exit.

Indian River County Shooting Range News

This region of Florida is becoming a major draw for clay target shooters, if it hasn't already.

Indian River County Shooting Range / Facebook
Sebastian, FL

Indian River County plans $740,000 expansion of public shooting range

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A new sporting clays shotgun course with 15 different shooting stations is part of expansion plans for the county's public shooting range near Sebastian.

The County Commission unanimously approved the plan at its Dec. 20 meeting. The county will now advertise the expansion project through an invitation to bid.

The $740,000 expansion, which includes the installation of lights at the facility on 102nd Terrace, will allow the 300-acre shooting range to expand its hours of operation. Currently, the range is not open on Tuesday and Wednesday, and closes other days at 5 p.m.

Range Improvements

Improvements at the Indian River County Public Shooting Range would include:

• Construction of a sporting clays shotgun course with 15 different shooting stations.

• 12-foot-wide cart path along the course for access.

• Three new combination skeet and trap ranges.

• New parking area at west end.

I had read in the past the range was not a money maker for the county. I gather someone convinced them that clay target shooting was the answer. Now, if they only don't charge the high shoot fees seen at county run ranges in Flordia...
