‘YouTube’ is my coach, says Usman Chand

I've been following the career of Pakistani clay target shooter Usman Chand via articles posted on the internet. His name pops up from time to time and he always seems to have something positive to say and not a bad shooter either!

In November when asked how he managed to improve his game, he said YouTube was his coach. “I don’t have any coach but YouTube. I watch videos of the best shooters and learn different techniques from them. I try the most suitable techniques and if I find them working for me I adopt them. This is an ongoing thing,” he said.

He further said that with the help of Army he and some other players built a shooting range in Sialkot on a piece of land measuring between three and four acres. “The Army gave us land and also helped us import duty-free machines. Now we have a club with 30 members and state-of-the-art machines. It is named Clover Shooting Club.” he said.

This week I come across this article.

KARACHI: Punjab’s young skeet shooter Usman Chand set a new record on Friday by winning gold medals in all three shotgun events in the 32nd National Games. He scored 124 out of 150 in trap event in individual category. He had already won gold in skeet event by scoring 149 out of 150 and in double trap event by scoring 154 out of 200.

Chand will be shooting in Qatar in February.  Be interesting to see how he does!

Teachers, the First Line of Defense!

I'm strongly against Gun Free Zones, as in reality they can quickly turn into Kill Zones, especially without the presence of armed individuals on the premises!

But this is not what this writing is about.

My thought is society already is aware of those who someday may do harm either to themselves and/or others.

In many situations the local community is not allowed to take action, as in the case of a homeless population in the community.  We know the homeless has rights, we know most have either drug or alcohol problems, we know that at times they are in danger, we know that homeless slum communities have been setup in wooded areas or parks; but laws have been written to protect them and the police can take no action unless a law is broken.  The police are often told by local politicians to ignore!  How's that working for you?

We have a like situation in regard to mental issues and youth in society.

We know who the problem child is, but either the law will not allow for society to take action or if it is allowed, the resources are not available.

Teachers in many cases can provide the early warning needed, as parents may be reluctant!
Talk to teachers who have developed a sixth sense after working the lower grades (yes, even in kindergarten) for a few years. They know who will be in and out of trouble in the coming years, either criminally or mentally!

Somehow we have to latch onto this society early warning and provide intervention and guidance for all involved.  Change the laws where needed and provide the resources. but we must allow schools to take the lead or at a minimum to be allowed to alert the mental heath community!   An alert that would be much like a response by child protective services when a child is reported to be in harms way.

Checks and balances, Yes, but ignore, No!

Parents Worry Their Child Could Be ‘Next Adam Lanza’
Taking care of such children is a difficult, and sometimes lifelong, task.    ”Families who have children like Adam (Lanza, the Conn. shooter) have to deal with this 24 hours a day for many years without much relief or much sympathy from other people, and yet it’s a nightmare,”

”These children often don’t marry, they don’t integrate into society very well. It is the responsibility of the parents, often the mother, and it is an ongoing challenge.”

Quotes from Wayne La Pierre

The NRA speaks: 14 Quotes from Wayne La Pierre

1) “The National Rifle Association’s 4 million mothers, fathers, sons and daughters join the nation in horror, outrage, grief and earnest prayer for the families of Newtown, Connecticut … who suffered such incomprehensible loss as a result of this unspeakable crime…Now, we must speak … for the safety of our nation’s children. Because for all the noise and anger directed at us over the past week, no one — nobody — has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now, starting today, in a way that we know works?”

2) “Politicians pass laws for Gun-Free School Zones. They issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them. And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk.”

3) “We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses — even sports stadiums — are all protected by armed security…Yet when it comes to the most beloved, innocent and vulnerable members of the American family — our children — we as a society leave them utterly defenseless, and the monsters and predators of this world know it and exploit it. That must change now!”

4) “How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame — from a national media machine that rewards them with the wall-to-wall attention and sense of identity that they crave — while provoking others to try to make their mark? A dozen more killers? A hundred? More? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation’s refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill?”

5) “Violent crime is increasing again for the first time in 19 years! Add another hurricane, terrorist attack or some other natural or man-made disaster, and you’ve got a recipe for a national nightmare of violence and victimization.”

6) “And here’s another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal: There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people. Through vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse. And here’s one: it’s called Kindergarten Killers. It’s been online for 10 years. How come my research department could find it and all of yours either couldn’t or didn’t want anyone to know you had found it? Then there’s the blood-soaked slasher films like “American Psycho” and “Natural Born Killers” that are aired like propaganda loops on “Splatterdays” and every day, and a thousand music videos that portray life as a joke and murder as a way of life. And then they have the nerve to call it “entertainment.” But is that what it really is? Isn’t fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography?

7) “The media call semi-automatic firearms “machine guns” — they claim these civilian semi-automatic firearms are used by the military, and they tell us that the .223 round is one of the most powerful rifle calibers … when all of these claims are factually untrue. They don’t know what they’re talking about! Worse, they perpetuate the dangerous notion that one more gun ban — or one more law imposed on peaceful, lawful people — will protect us where 20,000 others have failed!”

8) “As brave, heroic and self-sacrificing as those teachers were in those classrooms, and as prompt, professional and well-trained as those police were when they responded, they were unable — through no fault of their own — to stop it. As parents, we do everything we can to keep our children safe. It is now time for us to assume responsibility for their safety at school. The only way to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection.

9) “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Would you rather have your 911 call bring a good guy with a gun from a mile away … or a minute away?”

10) “Now, I can imagine the shocking headlines you’ll print tomorrow morning: “More guns,” you’ll claim, “are the NRA’s answer to everything!” Your implication will be that guns are evil and have no place in society, much less in our schools. But since when did the word “gun” automatically become a bad word? You know, five years ago, after the Virginia Tech tragedy, when I said we should put armed security in every school, the media called me crazy. But what if, when Adam Lanza started shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday, he had been confronted by qualified, armed security?”

11) “Ladies and gentlemen, there is no national, one-size-fits-all solution to protecting our children. But do know this President zeroed out school emergency planning grants in last year’s budget, and scrapped “Secure Our Schools” policing grants in next year’s budget. With all the foreign aid, with all the money in the federal budget, we can’t afford to put a police officer in every school? Even if they did that, politicians have no business – and no authority – denying us the right, the ability, or the moral imperative to protect ourselves and our loved ones from harm.”

12) “I call on Congress today to act immediately, to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school – and to do it now, to make sure that blanket of safety is in place when our children return to school in January. Right now, today, every school in the United States should plan meetings with parents, school administrators, teachers and local authorities – and draw upon every resource available – to erect a cordon of protection around our kids right now.”

13) “The NRA is going to bring all of its knowledge, dedication and resources to develop a model National School Shield Emergency Response Program for every school that wants it. From armed security to building design and access control to information technology to student and teacher training, this multi-faceted program will be developed by the very best experts in their fields.”

14) “If we truly cherish our kids more than our money or our celebrities, we must give them the greatest level of protection possible and the security that is only available with a properly trained – armed – good guy.”

The World just became a little more Dangerous

GIZMODO - Any sort of flying drone is already awesome. How do you make it more awesome? Attach a camera and arm it with a paintball gun so it can fly around and shoot unsuspecting people, animals and/or objects.

I could see someone buying something like that, but would not be attaching a paintball gun!

Only a matter of time....

Trap Semifinal using old equipment (Bunker Trap)

Olympic Bunker Trap

Vadim Zevlever (Toronto) calculated how to use old controllers in order to conduct the new Semifinal accordingly with the latest printing of ISSF rules, before the equipment is upgraded.

Traveling to Shoots @ Google Street View

Many times a GPS does not mark out the best route for traveling.  For a well traveled route we know what works best and take a road the GPS does not like, but we know from experience, the best route.

Recalculating, Recalculating, Recalculating....

Something you learn to live with!

Recently, I was planning a route that was to take me through a high traffic area.  According to the map, three of four options of travel.  I had previously traveled the GPS laid out route and was not satisfied with the route of travel, even after changing the GPS options from fastest to shortest.

I was reluctant to go off course and seek a better router, as a wrong decision could end up with me traveling down a road with slow traffic, dozen of traffic lights, and stop and go traffic.

I was messing around with Google Maps and took a look at Street View.  I found that I could access the routes that I thought would make a good alternative and could see actually photos of the road and road signs.

With my mouse cursor I could move down the road, as if traveling in my vehicle and see what a driver would see. Almost like viewing a video!

With my cursor I took an off ramp, entered a toll booth area, and after traveling through the toll booths, saw the two options for travel, either take a right or take a left.  I saw all vehicle lanes, E-ZPass lanes, and most importantly all the traffic road signs, to include the signs a mile from where I planned on turning.

Next time your traveling to an area that your not familiar with, take a look at Street View!
